ביום שלישי, 14.5 בשעה 17:30 נארח בטכניון את פרופ' רוברט וינסטון. וינסטון הוא גם מדען, גם רופא, גם אושיית טלויזיה וגם פוליטיקאי (מפלגת הלייבור). הרצאתו תעסוק בחשיבותה של תקשורת עם הציבור ומקבלי ההחלטות להתפתחות המדע בחברה דמוקרטית (תקציר בהמשך).
ההרצאה תתקיים ביום שלישי 14.5 בשעה 17:30 באודיטוריום ע"ש סליפקה בפקולטה לחינוך למדע וטכנולוגיה. ההרצאה (באנגלית) ללא תשלום, אך יש להירשם בקישור המצורף, שכן מספר המקומות מוגבל.

Why bother about Science?
Why do scientists have much more than mere responsibility to explain their science effectively? Communication is two-way and scientists must also listen to society. We need to understand that the technologies we produce can be misused. They can ultimately be destructive and cause many of serious problems facing all humanity and much of the planet. We must recognise the serious ways we increasingly threaten the environment, our health, imperil human life and the fate of many living organisms. No sane person should want, for example, to ban research into nuclear fission or fusion, bacteriological science, genetic modification, synthetic biology or nanotechnology, or indeed commercialisation of those technologies. But in a democratic society we must try to ensure that all of society is able to make wise decisions about technology and its use. Better education of both scientists and society is essential.
